I had an allergic reaction to a prescription drug called Bactrim when I was 33 yrs old. It caused a severe rash, a high fever and then my lungs collapsed. Fortunately, I made it to the hospital before my lungs collapsed, so I was quickly recesitated and put on a ventilator and there I remained in a drug induced comatose state for over 3 weeks. I spent a total of 72 days in the hospital and it was a long recovery. It took a long time for my lungs to return to normal function, all the tiny little blood vessels in my lungs had to grow back over time and after about a year my lungs were back to full normal funcioning. The high dose steriods, namely Medrol, that they gave me while I was in the drug endosed coma caused the blood flow to my hips to be cut off and due to this I suffered avascular necrosis of the hip joints which led to my right hip collapsing the same year of this incident. I finally got my right hip replaced in the same year and once that was taken care of I finally experienced a total recovery with the only lasting thing an artificial right hip and a some remaining avascular necrosis of the my left hip. It was a very interesting experience being so close to death about mid way through my drug endosed coma. I remember what was on my mind even though I was in this comatose state. It is something that I will never forget and has had a lasting effect on how I view life.
